Leadville Downtown & Tabor Opera House: A History Day
Explore Leadville’s historic downtown and Tabor Opera House with tour tips, accessibility details, a flexible walking plan and nearby lake outings.
Start your Leadville history day with a Tabor Opera House tour, then explore Harrison Avenue on foot. A confirmed tour or performance is worth planning around; shops and a meal can fill the rest of the outing without another reservation.
Your downtown plan at a glance
- Main stop: Tabor Opera House in downtown Leadville.
- Choose your experience: a building tour for history, or a performance for an evening out.
- Best pairing: a Harrison Avenue stroll and an unhurried meal.
- Access detail: the south-side auditorium entrance is accessible; upper floors are not.
What makes the Tabor worth going inside?
Horace Tabor built the opera house in 1879. The contrast between its elaborate performance space and its mining-town setting is the reason to make this more than a photo stop. The operator’s tour description includes the museum, theater, stage and dressing rooms, subject to access on the day. Look for the original red velvet theater chairs, and ask which parts of the historic stage-scenery collection can currently be seen.
The tour is also a useful choice when people in your group have had enough trail time.

A simple order for the day
- Book the anchor first. Open the Tabor visit page, select the actual travel month and confirm a tour time. For a show, use the events calendar.
- Arrive with room to browse. Walk Harrison Avenue before your booking, stopping when a storefront or building catches your interest. Keep the theater as your meeting point if the group separates.
- Tour, then take a break. Put a meal after the tour so you can linger over the exhibits without watching a restaurant reservation clock. See our guide to Leadville restaurants for groups for options near the theater.
- Choose one optional extension. Add more downtown browsing, walk part of the Mineral Belt Trail through Leadville's old mining district, or save the afternoon for Turquoise Lake, after checking its current access restrictions.
For a history-focused visit, spend the available time inside rather than adding a long drive. For a mixed-interest group, let the enthusiasts take the tour while others explore downtown, then reunite for a meal.
Tickets, seasons and accessibility
Tabor’s site currently offers seasonal public tours and private tours by appointment. Its calendar and general FAQ describe slightly different seasonal end windows, so use the dated ticket listing for your visit, especially in autumn. A performance and a historical tour are separate experiences; verify what your ticket includes.
If stairs are a concern, ask which rooms the specific tour will visit. Auditorium access does not establish access to the full building. Families are welcome, but the museum spaces call for closer supervision than an outdoor playground.
Questions before you go
Can you visit downtown without a theater booking?
Yes. Keep the Harrison Avenue walk, browsing and meal as the outing, then book the interior on another date. Do not build the entire day around an unconfirmed tour.
Is this a good alternative to a hiking day?
It offers a different pace and an indoor centerpiece. For a second gentle outing, compare Twin Lakes village and shoreline.
