Mount Massive Trailhead: Closures & Trip Alternatives

Check Mount Massive’s current trailhead closure, understand what reopened nearby, and choose useful Leadville or Twin Lakes alternatives for your trip.

Mount Massive’s main trailhead and trail remain closed in the official notices checked September 5, 2026. Do not drive there expecting to start a summit hike. For this trip-planning window, choose an open alternative and keep Massive as a future objective. You can still appreciate its broad mountain skyline from the Leadville area without entering the closed wilderness.

What the current notices say

Use the official closure map and signs to establish the boundary. This page’s photographs show the destination in earlier years; they do not depict present fire conditions.

Choose an alternative by what you wanted from Massive

You wanted mountain scenery

Make Twin Lakes village and shoreline the starting point for a day with room to stop and photograph the landscape. Select an open named route that fits the group rather than trying to reproduce a summit day elsewhere at short notice.

You wanted a demanding hiking day

Read the Mount Elbert Northeast Trail guide as a separate planning exercise, or compare routes on the Mount Elbert hike itself. Elbert has different access and a substantial climb of its own. For other options, see our guide to the best hikes near Leadville.

You wanted to see more of the Leadville area

Build the outing around downtown Leadville and Tabor Opera House. A booked tour, browsing and a meal can make a satisfying day without trailhead uncertainty. This is particularly useful if a mixed-interest group would welcome a break from hiking.

Keep a future Massive plan useful

Read distance, elevation gain, exposure and descent logistics together, and choose a forecast and turnaround plan appropriate to the outing. Whenever Massive reopens, read up on altitude sickness symptoms and acclimatization before anyone attempts it.

For now, save the official information links alongside the dates of your stay. If your visit is weeks away, make flexible arrangements for a different outing rather than relying on a possible reopening.

Mount Massive questions

Does an open Halfmoon Road mean the trail is open?

No. Road access and trail access are separate. The notices checked for this guide distinguish reopened nearby routes from the closed Massive area.

Can we use a different approach to bypass the closure?

Do not treat another trailhead as a workaround. The wilderness closure boundary matters as well as the named trailhead. Use the current official order before considering any route.

Should we cancel the whole Leadville and Twin Lakes visit?

A closed mountain route does not mean every local outing is closed. Choose from the alternatives above using their own current access information. Explore The Big Mack and available stay dates for a trip with more than one worthwhile day-out option.
