Twin Lakes & Independence Pass Fall Colors 2026: This Week’s Aspen Report
Updated September 27, 2026: Leadville’s byways are at peak and Twin Lakes shows a mix of gold, green, and red, with peak about a week early this year. Here is color by elevation, Independence Pass status checks, and one- and two-day plans.
As of September 27, 2026, the aspens around Leadville and Twin Lakes are at or just past peak, and the season is moving fast: plan any 2026 color trip for now through about the first week of October. Colorado’s drought and heat pushed peak color roughly a week earlier than normal this year, and recent storms have already stripped leaves in exposed spots. Wind and weather can end the show quickly, so the sooner the better.
If Independence Pass is part of the day, do not rely on this page—or any saved post—for a current open/closed answer. Check COtrip's live CO 82 information immediately before leaving.
Fall color this week (updated September 27, 2026)
Here is what published reports show, by elevation and area:
- Leadville and the Top of the Rockies byways (around 10,000 feet): At peak. Visit Leadville–Twin Lakes’ Fall Watch update, with photos taken September 20, reported the Top of the Rockies Scenic Byway, Turquoise Lake, and the Mineral Belt Trail “at peak,” shining gold.
- Twin Lakes (about 9,200 feet): A strong mix of green, gold, and red, per the same update, with some trees already bare around the Forebay area. A Colorado hiking blogger who drove the area on September 16 found Independence Pass colorful but the Twin Lakes basin “just starting to turn colors” and suggested waiting one to two weeks—which lands on right about now.
- Independence Pass, Twin Lakes side (up to the 12,095-foot summit): The higher, exposed aspen stands turned first and are the most likely to be thinning by now. Above treeline there are no aspens; the payoff is the alpine view and low tundra color.
- Aspen side of the pass (lower, west of the summit): Later. Rocky Mountain PBS reported on September 18 that the Explore Fall forecast map put Aspen’s peak window at September 30 to October 6, about seven days earlier than normal, and rated its expected quality “very poor” this year.
- Why it is early and thinner: Rocky Mountain PBS reported that much of Colorado’s high country is in exceptional drought after the state’s hottest June through August on record. A Western Colorado University professor of environment and sustainability summed it up: color will be “a little earlier” and “a little less.”
Road and access notes, checked September 27: Visit Leadville–Twin Lakes’ current alerts page (latest update September 20) listed all major highways open, including Highway 82 over Independence Pass. CDOT says the pass typically closes for winter on or near November 7, and vehicles or vehicle-and-trailer combinations over 35 feet are never allowed. Separately, the Willow Fire closure west of Leadville still covers the main Mount Massive Trail, Halfmoon Lakes and Willow Creek trails, a section of the Colorado Trail, the Leadville Fish Hatchery, and part of the road around the south side of Turquoise Lake. The Interlaken Trail, South Elbert Trail, and Hope Pass were listed open.
Choose the view you actually want
Twin Lakes for water and reflected color
Start around the lakes if your goal is aspen, mountain reflections, and a flexible morning. The shoreline and village let you change plans without committing to the pass. The Interlaken Trail follows the shoreline through an aspen grove to the historic Interlaken Resort, about 2.5 miles from the trailhead, and early light gives you room to leave before the busiest part of the day.

Independence Pass for the high-alpine contrast
The pass corridor climbs from the Twin Lakes side to a 12,095-foot summit. Treat the summit as the alpine payoff and the approaches as part of the color search. This late in a fast season, the lower stretches toward Aspen may hold color longer than the high groves. Use established pullouts, keep the road clear, and turn around if road, weather, or comfort says the plan has changed.

Leadville for a lower-commitment backup
Leadville's streets and the Mineral Belt Trail add aspen, mining history, indoor options, and an itinerary that does not depend on crossing the pass. With the byways around town reported at peak, this is also this week’s most reliable color. Our Leadville downtown and Tabor Opera House guide covers the town side; for more choices around both towns, use the things-to-do hub for Twin Lakes and Leadville.
Is Independence Pass open? Use this live-status strategy
Seasonal timing is not current road status. CDOT says Independence Pass operation is weather-permitting and directs travelers to COtrip for status updates. Use this order every time:
- Open COtrip on the day of the drive.
- Check CO 82 using the Road Closures, Weather Alerts, Cameras, and Trip Planner views.
- Review CDOT's Independence Pass travel page for pass-specific restrictions and driving guidance.
- Check Leadville–Twin Lakes current alerts for local changes, including fire-related closures.
- If sources conflict or conditions are unclear, choose the Twin Lakes or Leadville plan instead.
Because CDOT runs the pass on a weather-permitting basis, an early storm can affect it well before the typical November closure, so a sunny forecast in town is not enough.
Crowds and weather: make the day easier
These are planning recommendations, not a forecast:
- Go on a weekday when your schedule allows.
- Start early and make Twin Lakes the first stop.
- Build extra time for pullouts and slow traffic; do not stop in the travel lane or invent a shoulder.
- Carry layers and water, and be ready for a colder, windier summit than the valley.
- Keep the pass optional until the same-day checks are complete.
- Save a Leadville indoor choice for the time block with the weakest weather.
The U.S. Forest Service notes that the Twin Lakes Recreation Area draws heavy seasonal visitation. A calmer plan comes from starting early and choosing fewer stops, not racing through every viewpoint.
A one-day fall plan
- Check COtrip and local alerts before breakfast.
- Start with Twin Lakes shoreline light and a village stop.
- If CO 82 and the weather support it, drive the pass corridor with time for established pullouts.
- If they do not, stay around Twin Lakes and shift the afternoon to Leadville and the byway loops reported at peak.
- End with one Leadville walk, museum visit, or direct-operator activity instead of adding another long drive.
A two-day fall plan
Day one: Twin Lakes and the movable scenic drive
Use the lake and village as the fixed plan. Add Independence Pass only after the live checks pass. If color is thin in one zone, change elevation rather than declaring the whole trip a miss.
Day two: Leadville and one active choice
Walk part of the historic district or Mineral Belt Trail, then choose one indoor or reserved activity. If your group wants a trail or fishing day, check current access and fire closures first and use the dedicated guide:
Coming in October instead?
Visit Leadville–Twin Lakes says the local season can run into the first week of October, but in an early year like this one, color around Twin Lakes is likely to be thin by mid-October. Build that trip around lake views, Leadville, and the town calendar rather than peak aspen. Leadville’s calendar still has anchors: Visit Leadville–Twin Lakes lists a Main Street Auction at the Tabor Opera House on October 3 and OctoberVille fireworks and a parade on October 17. Check the organizers’ pages before you build a trip around them.

Stay where the fall plans split easily
The Big Mack sits across the road from Twin Lakes at about 9,200 feet and sleeps 12 across four bedrooms, so one group can take an early photo drive up the pass while another keeps a slower lakeside or Leadville morning. After a cold day at altitude, the hot tub and fireplace do the rest. Keep the pass day flexible, choose the elevation that fits the actual color, and check your dates and book direct.
